Why a Private Swim Coach Makes All the Difference for Kids with Disabilities

One-on-one lessons in Ogden, UT built around your swimmer's needs
Water can be one of the best places for a child to build confidence — or one of the most dangerous. For families raising autistic kids, teens, or adults, that second reality hits close to home. Autistic children are far more likely to drown than their neurotypical peers, and traditional group swim classes often aren't built to keep up with a child who wanders, struggles with instructions, or needs more time and repetition to feel safe in the water.
That's exactly why Nova Swim exists — and why a private swim coach is such a different experience than a standard swim class.
What a Private Swim Coach Actually Offers
A group lesson asks a child to learn on the class's timeline. A private swim coach flips that entirely. At Nova Swim, every lesson is one-on-one, which means:
Your swimmer sets the pace — no rushing to keep up, no waiting around bored
Instructors adjust in real time to sensory needs, communication style, and comfort level
Skills are only advanced once they're consistent, comfortable, and safe — not just "good enough for today"
Non-verbal or physically disabled swimmers get the individualized attention that group settings can't provide
This isn't swim lessons with an inclusion add-on. It's water safety built from the ground up for the disability community.
Meet Your Private Swim Coach
Every Nova Swim instructor is CPR certified, and have various certifications to teach water safety.
Go to our employee page to learn more about their current certifications, as our teachers are always gaining more knowledge about swimming and water safety!
The strong combination of lifesaving credentials and adaptive teaching experience is what separates a true private swim coach from a general swim instructor working through a group roster.
Our team has taught babies as young as six months, kids, teens, and adults up to age 35 and beyond. This is including swimmers who are non-verbal, have limited mobility, or need extra time to feel safe putting their face in the water. We will accept anyone, with any ability, and any age, as long as they need help with water safety and sign up with Nova Swim!
We're Not Just Splashing Around... We're A Program Built on Real Water Safety
Nova Swim's curriculum runs through eight structured levels, from first getting comfortable putting a face in the water all the way, and then starting to swim four competitive strokes and treading water for a minute and a half. Along the way, swimmers complete a Water Safety Survival Test: a clothed-entry simulation that teaches them what to actually do if they fall into water unexpectedly.
Every level is designed around one goal: real, repeatable safety skills, taught by a private swim coach who knows your swimmer personally, not just their skill level on a chart.

Where Lessons Happen
Nova Swim lessons take place in a private, on-site pool inside the Nova Supports clinic in Ogden, Utah. The pool's max depth is 5 feet, and always supervised by a swim teacher, with attached bathrooms and showers for easy changing. It's a calm, predictable environment, which matters just as much as the instructor for a lot of the swimmers we work with.
Nova Swim started as a pilot program offering water safety as part of ABA therapy for autistic kids, teens, and adults. But we knew the need was bigger than us. It's since grown to welcome anyone with a disability who wants access to one-on-one lessons. No ABA enrollment required!
